Let’s be real—getting in front of a camera can feel awkward, especially when your little one isn’t quite in the mood or you’re unsure of how to “pose.” If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone. I work with a lot of families who feel this way, and that’s exactly why I make my sessions fun, relaxed, and pressure-free.
Here are five of my favorite tips to help camera-shy kids—and their parents—feel more comfortable and confident during your photo session.
1. Keep It Moving
Still poses can feel unnatural for kids (and grown-ups too). We’ll keep things active with walking, twirling, or a simple game like tag. Movement breaks the tension and leads to natural smiles and genuine expressions.

2. Skip the “Say Cheese”
Sometimes the more we ask kids to smile, the more stiff and forced they get. Instead, I’ll chat with them, tell a silly joke, or let them share something they love. That’s when their real smile shines through.
3. Get In Close
Some of the sweetest moments come from quiet connection. Hug your child, brush their hair off their face, hold hands. Not only do these actions feel comforting, but they also photograph beautifully.

4. Don’t Stress the Wiggles
Your child doesn’t have to be perfectly still or smiling the entire time. In fact, I welcome the in-between moments: a shy glance, a goofy face, or a snuggle break. That’s where the real personality shows.
5. Trust Me (I’ve Got You)
You don’t need to know how to pose or direct your kids. That’s my job. I’ll guide you gently, offer suggestions, and let things unfold naturally. You just get to be present and enjoy your time together.

Remember, it’s not about perfect poses—it’s about capturing your family’s connection, exactly as it is. And honestly? Those imperfect, real moments are usually the ones you’ll treasure most.
